How to move forward with your life.

I am hearing from so many sources so many elegant pieces of advice, usually with a number attached. Maybe they are useful for you, maybe not quite so.

They are useful, if they are universal or if they correspond to the life stage you currently go through.

If however, you catch yourself experiencing strong negative emotions that keep holding you back in some way, this short read may serve as a suggestion what to do about them.

It is a part of a series of articles where I’m reporting a case I came across with one of my clients. I…

A girl resisting a temptation by Zuzanna Jura

What happens when we give in to temptations — and the most common ways to resist them.

We all wish to accomplish different things in life. And we all have problems that make it difficult for us. They have many faces, they have many names: distractions, desires, temptations, procrastination and “if thou wilt make a man happy, add not unto his riches but take away from his desires” (Epicurus).

Wilhelm Hofmann (Hofmann et al, 2012) makes a distinction between desires, which just distract us from our current task, and temptations that are directly counterproductive to our goals. Desires and temptations are both affectionately charged motivations towards a certain object, person or activity that is associated with pleasure…

On life procrastination and DEADlines

I turned 50 two months ago, and my country's statistics say I have more or less 24 years ahead of me. I am talking about life expectancy.

“A life expectancy is just an average period of time you might expect to live based on assumptions about mortality rates. It’s entirely possible that you could live well beyond your calculated life expectancy — or fall well short. Using statistical terms, the “standard deviation” around calculated life expectancies is quite large.”

If the standard deviation around life expectancy is eight years, then 71% of men in Poland…

Episode 1 — what is stress?

“It’s two in the morning, you’re in bed. The next day, a very important event awaits you, for example a decisive meeting, presentation, exam. So you need a good dose of rest, but still stay fully awake. You try different strategies to relax, breathe slowly and deeply, imagine mountain landscapes with chamois. But instead of feeling relieving peace, you keep thinking that if you don’t fall asleep your career will be ruined. And here you lie, and your tension grows with each passing second. “

What helps me to have a “beautiful meditation”.

Artwork by Zuzanna Jura

I have been meditating for several years, I have done MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction), MBCT (Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy — in four days, but still), completed postgraduate studies “Mindfulness and Compassion” and read several books on the subject.

I can see how big, positive impact meditation has on my emotional state, but I’m still struggling. There are a few practical things that help me and below I share this knowledge with you. Maybe it will help someone?

Just as we have different nutrients to support us in practicing sports, we may have different techniques to help us with other…

Daenerys riding her dragon by Zuzanna Jura

Theories revisited: On the BIGGEST obstacle to change.

Waiting for the final season of the Game of Thrones somehow gets in the way of doing my research. Last episode I re-watched was the one when Daenerys addresses slaves of Meereen hoping to persuade them to support her plan of abolishing slavery in the Slavers’ Bay. In order to do that, Daenerys not only delivers the speech, but also orders the broken slave collars from the slaves of Astapor and Yunkai to be flung over the city-walls. This serves as a message to the slaves inside the city. …

The Rider and The Elephant by Zuzanna Jura

“Long-term goals, man, it is just so hard…Do I have one? Yeah, death.”

The below story is made up of a number of concerns my coaching clients expressed during workshops that I ran. I just put them all together.

Humans have a limited amount of willpower — the energy needed for daily activities. It is used when making decisions, solving problems or fighting a temptation.

Temptation is a promise of instant gratification. It undermines a long-term result. It is like having a kilo of doughnuts with whipped cream now instead of taking part in Kung Fu contest next year in Hong Kong. (Maybe too much Panda series with my kids?) …
